Kid’s movies and gory TV dramas are expected to provide inspiration for the most popular costumes this Halloween.

According to Value Village's fifth annual Halloween survey, when it comes to young trick or treaters, “Frozen” costumes are showing no sign of cooling, and dressing up like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will also be popular.

Meanwhile, The Walking Dead and other zombie-related flicks are having an impact on adult’s costumes. Value Village’s Lena Dacosta says it doesn’t take a lot of money to create a truly horrific outfit.

“I had a new pair of stockings. I just ripped them, added shoes, makeup, I did my hair, and this one is like $29.99, what I’m wearing."

The Value Village survey also found more than half of Vancouver residents will don a costume this year, with a quarter of those costumes inspired by the movies. More than half of respondents said they would prefer their costume to be funny rather than sexy. And not to forget Fido: 22 per cent of pet owners plan on buying coordinating costumes for their dogs.

If you’re not up to creating your own costume, Watts Costume Rentals in Vancouver can help. It’s the biggest store of its kind in Western Canada, with thousands of Halloween costumes to rent between $45 and $180. It has everything from Elvis-inspired outfits, to Spanish dancercostumes to Chewbacca.

"Everybody likes to be in the 20s. I don't know if it's the glamour of prohibition or what it is, but people love to be flappers, they love to be gangsters," said store spokesperson Diva MacDonald.

When it comes to celebrity costumes, Prince George, the son of William and Kate, is expected to be popular and Lady Gaga is still hot, according to recent surveys.
