KAMLOOPS, B.C. - A verdict has been handed down in B-C Supreme court in Kamloops for the man accused of ramming his speedboat into the back of a houseboat on Shuswap Lake more than five years ago.

Leon Reinbrecht has been found guilty of criminal negligence causing death and criminal negligence causing bodily harm in the July 2010 collision that killed houseboat operator Ken Brown.

Several passengers on the houseboat were also hurt.

In her decision, Justice Sheri Donegan ruled Reinbrecht's actions were irresponsible and careless, and he did not take the safety of others into account when he drank and smoked marijuana before taking his speedboat out on the lake.

Witnesses told the court they saw the speedboat being driven erratically just before the crash that followed a Canada Day fireworks display.

Members of Brown's family were in the courtroom for the verdict and applauded as the ruling was read out.
