A section of guard rail from the Steveston Overpass just north of the Massey Tunnel was sent plummeting down onto Highway 99 below after a car smashed into it Monday afternoon.

A woman was driving across the overpass when she lost control of her car and crashed into the south-side rail around 2 p.m.

Part of the guard rail fell into the bus lane below, while another part remained attached and dangled into the southbound right lane ofthe highway.

The railing prevented the car from going over the edge and no vehicles below were hit by the fallen rail.

The accident affected traffic, but maintenance contractor Mainroad is working to cut off the dangling section and remove it from the freeway.

Officials planned to put the counterflow lane in early to accommodate the single-lane traffic. Crews hoped to clear the accident by 4:30 p.m. for rush-hour traffic.
