Pet owners in Maple Ridge are being warned about a yet-unidentified person deliberately spreading glass shards in an off-leash dog park.

Tina DeOliveira told CTV News the glass started showing up in Volker Park a couple months ago.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” DeOliveira said. “It starts out with small shattered glass but what are they going to do next?”

There have been 10 separate incidents reported, and apart from glass city staff have found nails embedded in the ground at a nearby park with the points facing up.

Maple Ridge parks manager Geoff Mallory told CTV News he’s never seen anything like it in his 23-year career.

“[It’s] very disturbing,” Mallory said. “We’re sending out letters to all the nearby residents asking them to be extra vigilant.”

The city has also alerted Mounties about the apparent attempts to injure animals.

Some worried dog owners have already stopped coming to the park, while DeOliveira has resorted to scouring the grounds for hazards before letter her dog play.

Anyone who sees anything suspicious at the park is asked to call the Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment at 604-467-7607.
