Buy tickets to the ball game and put down the tube socks— that’s the key to shopping for dad this Father’s Day.

According to a recent survey from Ebates, a cash back shopping site, dads would prefer to take part in shared experiences and spend quality time with their families instead of receiving material goods this year.

Of the dads surveyed, 32 per cent said they’d most like a vacation for Father’s Day and 31 per cent wanted to see a live sporting event.

More than 60 per cent of dads said they wanted to celebrate the holiday with their families. Similarly, the top gift choice among moms this year for Mother’s Day was quality time spent together with the family. However, according to those surveyed, families were planning to spend about half as much on their dads as they did on their moms for Mother’s Day.

Beer was also a popular gift choice for dads, with 25 per cent of respondents saying they’d love to receive a few cold ones, and 21 per cent saying they would appreciate some new barbeque tools. Dads are also interested in getting some new gadgets, as 28 per cent said they wanted a new tablet and 26 per cent said they’d like a watch.

The survey results should be a warning for shoppers who are thinking of encouraging dad to hit the treadmill. The number one thing fathers don’t want to receive this year is a gym membership, with 92 per cent of dads saying they would prefer to receive anything else. Underwear and socks are also not a good choice as 36 per cent of dads said they’re sick of getting them, and 35 per cent of dads are tired of being gifted ties. The survey found 56 per cent of dads occasionally choose their own Father’s Day presents.

The survey was conducted online on April 7 and 8 with 1,003 respondents aged 18 and older in the United States.
