HUDSON'S HOPE, B.C. -- Conservation officers from northeastern British Columbia hope to travel to an Edmonton hospital Tuesday to speak with a hunter believed to have been mauled by a grizzly bear.

The 60-year-old victim managed to return to his vehicle and drive to a remote camp for help after being attacked on Saturday afternoon in Butler Ridge Provincial Park near Hudson's Hope, about 100 kilometres west of Fort St. John.

Conservation Officer Brad Lacey says the man was hunting alone when he was attacked and suffered injuries to his head, arms and legs.

He was airlifted to Fort St. John for treatment but was then transferred to the University of Alberta Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

Lacey reports a recent increase in confrontations between humans and bears, noting more people are venturing into the bush just as the bruins are focused on gathering food and building up body fat prior to hibernation.

He also warns that hunters may not be the only ones on the prowl, and their actions while stalking moose or deer could make them seem like prey to a hungry bear.
