People flying with their pets this holiday season may have to make alternate plans, as annual animal restrictions soon take effect.

Both WestJet and Air Canada have an embargo on pets being transported as checked baggage in the weeks surrounding Christmas.

Air Canada says there's limited room in the cargo hold because of heavy holiday travel, which means the area isn’t as safe for pets.

Some smaller pets will still be allowed in the cabin as long as the carriers fit under the seat.  WestJet allows three pet kennels on each flight.

WestJet's blackout dates are between December 15th and January 6th.  Air Canada's restrictions start on the same day, but last until January 12th.
