A woman with Alzheimer’s who went missing from a Burnaby mall has been located several towns away from where she was last seen, but it’s still unclear how she got there.

Jeanne Lemieux, 61, disappeared from Lougheed Town Centre around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Surveillance video showed her leaving the mall through The Bay.

She was with a caretaker but they were somehow separated. Police said she was likely confused and disoriented.

Her disappearance sparked a search by Coquitlam Search and Rescue. More than a dozen searchers scoured the area but they couldn’t find anything.

Lemieux was found in the 6800-block of 176th Avenue in Surrey’s Cloverdale neighbourhood on Thursday. RCMP say the area is full of farm fields and Lemieux was located down a slight embankment.

She was taken to hospital by ambulance and treated for hypothermia, but has no physical injuries.

Mounties say she is now being reunited with her family.

It’s still unclear how she was able to travel such a distance. Authorities are reviewing surveillance tapes from transit to see if she took SkyTrain for part of the journey.
