A massive fire broke out in Maple Ridge Wednesday, damaging one home and destroying four others that were still under construction.

The blaze began at around 4 p.m. near 136A Avenue and 228 Street, quickly engulfing a number of neighbouring homes in the new Silver Ridge development.

No one was at home in the completed structure, which was still standing when the fire was extinguished but had a massive hole burned through one side of the structure.

Authorities say the cause of the blaze is still under investigation, though witnesses say a crew of workers were sealing the deck of one of the homes with blowtorches shortly before it started.

Crews had trouble fighting the inferno due to water pressure problems, but still managed to extinguish the flames by 6:30 p.m.

No injuries associated with the fire or firefighting efforts have been reported.
