Friends and family of a young pregnant woman killed as a bystander to a car crash in Abbotsford Saturday are still trying to understand how the horrific accident occurred.

Luba Grigor told CTV News that she's still in shock about the death of her friend and co-worker, a 27-year-old woman who has only been identified by her first name, Laurel. She was six months pregnant when she was killed.

"I can't even describe the feeling. I cried all day yesterday," Grigor said. "She was really excited to have a baby."

Laurel was waiting to cross the street with her husband and father at the intersection of South Fraser Way and Ware Street when the family was hit by a Honda Prelude that had collided with a Ford pickup truck. The truck had allegedly run a red light before striking the Prelude.

The family was rushed to hospital, but neither Laurel nor her baby could be saved.

Laurel's father was pinned to a power pole by the crash, causing serious injuries to his back and lower body. He underwent surgery on Saturday and is expected to survive.

The husband suffered only minor physical injuries.

A series of collisions followed the initial crash, ultimately involving five vehicles with a sixth being struck with debris.

Police say they may recommend charges under the criminal code or the Motor Vehicle Act in connection with Laurel's death.

Abbotsford police spokesman Const. Ian MacDonald said Monday that an investigation is underway into which car was at fault in the collision.

"We want to do a thorough and comprehensive investigation for citizens of this community and for this family," he said.
