The westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway that were closed due to a fatal collision near Langley Wednesday morning have reopened.

Mounties said a dump truck hauling a trailer full of gravel crashed just before the 264th Street off-ramp around 9 a.m., killing the driver.

“At this time police suspect mechanical failure was the cause of the crash,” Cpl. Robert McDonald said in a statement.

“It’s extremely fortunate only one vehicle was involved.”

The cause of the crash hasn't been confirmed, but investigators suspect the dump truck blew a front tire.

The collision left gravel strewn across Highway 1, and forced Mounties to close all westbound lanes until around 6 p.m.

The eastbound lanes also became partially blocked around noon after a semi-truck tried to turn around and ended up in a ditch.
