When Shiloh Johnston was killed in a horrific collision in Burnaby last week, she was in the midst of planning a memorial for her younger sister Keziah.

Keziah had died just 10 days earlier, in a tragedy the family has chosen to keep private, and Shiloh was determined to honour her memory with a bench bearing her name.

“They lived together and she adored her. That was her favourite person in the whole wide world,” said Amanda Masih, a friend of the siblings.

Sadly, Shiloh never got the chance to see her plan through. She was out on her lunch break last Tuesday when two cars crashed on Canada Way, sending one careening in her direction.

Shiloh was 22. Her sister was just 20.

Struck by such unimaginable heartbreak, family and friends have set out to pay tribute to the siblings they describe as caring, compassionate and inseparable.

“They are both wonderful, equally amazing girls,” Masih said. “They both impacted so many people over their short little lives. Some people live to be 80 and they don’t make that impact.”

Masih said Shiloh, whom she met at church, was passionate about charity and helping others. Before a trip they took to India and Nepal a few years ago, Shiloh wrote and illustrated a children’s book all by herself that she could give to local kids.

“She was like a little child helping little children because she was so excited,” Masih said.

Janica Lucas, the young women’s cousin, said the family has decided the best way to honour the sisters is to finish the memorial bench and dedicate it to both of them.

“I know it’s something Shiloh really wanted for her sister, so we want to continue that,” Lucas said. “We just want to have somewhere people can go to remember the girls and the legacy they left.”

A GoFundMe page was set up Wednesday to raise money for the project, and has already collected more than $3,600. The goal is $50,000, and any money that isn’t needed for the bench will be donated to the sisters’ favourite charities.

The family is also going through with a service Shiloh had been planning for Keziah on March 7, where both sisters will now be honoured.
