The family of Simon Fraser University student Maple Batalia who was shot dead in a Surrey parking lot a year ago is pleading for answers.

Police have never named a suspect in the 19-year-old aspiring actress’s murder and believe there are people in the community who have information about Batalia’s death who have not yet come forward.

Batalia’s family and friends alleged she was having trouble with a former boyfriend at the time of her death.

Gurjinder Dhaliwal was charged with allegedly assaulting Batalia and others after an incident at a Surrey Tim Hortons four days before her murder. The charges were later stayed because of a lack of evidence.

Relatives and friends will gather Friday in a Surrey park to remember her life.

“We're asking everyone in the community to join us because it will be a reminder of her passing as well as us still waiting for justice,” Batalia’s sister Roseleen said. “Just do the right thing.”

The vigil begins at 7 p.m. in Holland Park.
