The family of a young man who died after a teenager plowed a Jeep into a Surrey bus stop Wednesday morning is struggling to make sense of the tragedy.

Evan Archibald was sitting on a bench beside a bus shelter at the intersection of 156 Street and Fraser Highway when a black Jeep jumped the curb and crashed into him, pinning him between the bench and the vehicle.

His grieving mother paid a visit the scene later in the day, and told CTV News the tragedy has left her “devastated.”

“He was young. He was 22 years old,” Karla Drew said. “You don’t think you’re going to wake up and find your son’s died just doing nothing.”

The family said Archibald was on his way to work when he was killed.

The RCMP is still trying to determine the cause of the crash, but said weather and driver inexperience are possible factors.

A 17-year-old girl from Surrey was behind the wheel of the Jeep, which had an “N” decal on it.

Witnesses said the teenager, who sustained minor injuries in the crash, seemed distraught.

“They pulled her into the police car with the door open… they put a blanket around her and she was crying,” Alexander Mason said.

It’s too soon to say whether she will face any charges. The RCMP said she is cooperating with investigators.

Mounties said the Jeep was making a left turn onto Fraser Highway when it veered off the road and mounted the curb.

Eastbound traffic on the highway was temporarily closed off to make room for the Surrey RCMP’s Criminal Collision Investigation Team and the Integrated Collision and Reconstructionist Service.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact the RCMP at 604-599-0502, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS if they wish to remain anonymous.
