An elderly man was attacked while he lay in bed in a West Vancouver home after a burglar broke in early Wednesday morning.

A 72-year-old man living in the home located in the 400-block of Raindance Crescent awoke at around 4 a.m. to find a male intruder, who hit him in the head.

The suspect grabbed a full wooden jewelry box as well as the elderly man's wallet containing cash and credit cards before he fled the house.

A 70-year-old woman was also home at the time but was unharmed.

The couple could only briefly describe the man as 5-10 tall and about 200 lbs. They said he spoke English, had a deep voice and was wearing dark clothing with a baseball cap and a bandana on his face, but they could not discern his race or other details about his appearance.

When West Vancouver police arrived on scene, the suspect could not be found. Paramedics also attended and treated the man's facial injuries onsite.

Surrounding police departments have been notified of the robbery and special investigation teams continue to search for the suspect.

Police are asking those with information to call the West Vancouver Police Department at 604-925-7300 and refer to WVPD File # 12-603.
