An elderly couple is recovering in hospital after crashing their car into a Vancouver apartment complex Wednesday afternoon.

The driver, a man believed to be in his mid-80s, lost control of the vehicle while coming down a driveway at King Edward Avenue and Arbutus Street around 1:15 p.m. and hit a concrete wall.

The vehicle then flipped over and came to a rest right beside the building’s pool.

Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services Battalion Chief Terry Nikolai confirmed the couple was not seriously hurt.

“Both of the occupants were able to be removed with minor injuries,” Nikolai said. “The driver actually walked away from it and his wife was taken away by ambulance with some spinal precautions.”

The car was leaking gas and a hazmat team was called to the scene to empty the tank.

Firefighters said the vehicle will eventually be removed using a crane.
