The Vancouver police are sounding the alarm about the illegal drug GHB after two teens and one young man overdosed on the drug at a dance party in East Vancouver.

A 14-year-old girl, 15-year-old boy and 20-year-old man were rushed to hospital and put into intensive care shortly after 10 p.m. last Friday after all three were suspected of overdosing on the so-called date rape drug, also referred to as liquid ecstasy.

Officers arrived to a disturbance call at the Polish Veterans Hall on Kingsway to find around 100 young people “milling around” in front of the facility after leaving an event put on by a local promoter.

Police say many partygoers were under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The 20-year-old man was discovered unresponsive and foaming at the month after he was carried out of the hall by his friends.

Soon after, the teen boy was found near the hall also overdosing. The teen girl was found nearby, also foaming at the mouth and unconscious.

Fusion Productions, which threw the event, said it’s hosted monthly events for the past few years with very few hiccups.

Event organizers say they’re meeting with police and city officials Friday to make sure future events “run safely and smoothly,” adding that there is a zero tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol at all of its parties.

“Proper procedure is always followed with attendees for every situation. We stand by what we do, and are glad we can provide a safe, fun environment for our attendees,” a spokesperson said in a statement emailed to CTV News.

“A few bad apples should not ruin this for everybody who follows the rules.”

VPD Spokesperson Sgt. Randy Fincham said the incident highlights the importance of parents talking to their children about the potentially lethal consequences of using drugs.

GHB, short for Gamma-Hydroxybutyric Acid, is commonly used as an anesthetic. In small doses it can act as a stimulant.

It can be potentially lethal if mixed with alcohol. The drug is often found as a white powder, and can be dissolved in water to form a clear and odourless solution.
