The community of Hope, B.C. is rallying around the grieving family of a young boy who was tragically killed by a garbage truck outside his family home.

More than 100 people gathered for a vigil in the eight-year-old’s memory on Wednesday night, just hours after the fatal crash.

An online fundraiser set up to help pay his funeral costs has also already collected $2,200.

On the fundraiser page, Jorin Mills is remembered as a “silly, happy boy who had a contagious smile and a huge heart.”

The youngster was killed in front of his home around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. He was transported to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Witnesses say the boy was chasing a dog across the street when he was struck.

“You see the dog running by [and] Jorin came running after him and the garbage truck got him,” neighbour Talia Edwards told CTV Vancouver.

Witnesses say the truck wasn’t going very fast because it had just pulled over to pull garbage. The young boy ended up being pinned underneath.

“You don’t know who to feel worse for – the family or that poor truck driver,” said neighbour Kay Edwards.

Witnesses say it appears the truck didn’t see the boy. Authorities said the driver of the garbage truck is fully cooperating.

The cause of the crash hasn’t been confirmed, but the incident is still being investigated by the RCMP and BC Coroners Service. Victim services has been in contact with his family.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact the Hope RCMP detachment at 604-869-7750, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 to remain anonymous.
