Apple made it official this week: It’s embracing wireless technology and consumers are going to have to adapt.

The new Apple 7 will no longer have an audio jack but that doesn’t mean you have to buy Apple’s wireless AirPods.

Apple is doing away with the audio port and replacing it with lightening cable. Consumers will be able to either charge their phone or listen but not both, unless they buy wireless earbuds or a wireless headset.

Apple’s AirpPods will charge in the carrying case and cost about $200. The design by Beats by Dre is expected to deliver superior sound and will have voice activation to connect with SIRI but they haven’t been tested yet.

Consumer Reports has some tested recommendations that consumers may find more suitable.

“Wireless headphones are a big part of our ratings. We have more than 60 in there now, some with very good sound quality,” said Consumer Reports audio expert Elias Arias.

For a good portable pair Consumer Reports recommends the Sony h.ear MDR-EX750BT which cost about $270. Arias says they deliver very good sound and will keep some ambient sounds out while keeping your music in.

If you are looking for noise cancelling headphones the $500 Parrot Zik 3 has excellent active noise reduction and very good sound quality. And for exercising Consumer Reports suggests the $130 MEE Audio X7 Plus. They stay in place with a lot of vigorous movement.

However, as with any wireless device you will need to carry a charging unit. Or if you buy an iPhone 7 you may be satisfied to listen through lightning connected ear buds and remove them when you want to charge the phone.
