The family dog shot in the face by Richmond RCMP will now need a second surgery.

The dog, named Koda, was injured as police were investigating a robbery.

According to police, officers were searching for the robbery suspect in a backyard on Garden City Road on Friday morning when they were confronted by two dogs. Koda was shot and underwent surgery with its veterinary bills adding up to $3,500.

Hector Riquelme, Koda’s owner, said the dog will now require a second surgery that comes with a $3,000 price tag.

Richmond RCMP told CTV News that Koda’s owners were told how they could get compensation for their dog’s injury, but Riquelme said one of the officers called the vet clinics and told them the police “will not be covering any amount of money.”
