A family is in mourning after a Delta man and his dog were killed in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 91 Sunday night.

Luis Ronald Calderon Sanchez and his pet dog died after he lost control of his Toyota Corolla at the Nordel Way off-ramp and drove into a lamp standard.

Mounties say the Corolla hit the pole on the driver’s side door with enough force to wrap the vehicle around it.

“This is the second traffic fatality [within] 36 hours. Two families are mourning the loss of a loved one at a time when they should be celebrating the holiday season,” Sgt. Peter Thiessen said in a statement.

In the previous crash, an 82-year-old Hope woman died after driving into oncoming traffic on Highway 1.

With winter weather conditions worsening, the RCMP is urging drivers to slow down and use extra caution on the roads.

No other vehicles were involved in Sunday’s crash. Police said weather and speed are considered factors, but could not confirm whether alcohol was involved.

Mounties and the BC Coroners Service are continuing to investigate.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the Deas Island RCMP detachment at 604-946-2184.
