The Steele on Your Side unit has teamed up with local blogger Marc Smith and some generous B.C. businesses to help make the season a little brighter for low income pet owners.

As part of the 30 Days of Kindness Campaign, the CTV consumer team put together dozens of doggie bags filled with donated dog food from Petcurean, dog toys from Bow Wow Haus and Modern Dog magazines.

"It's me documenting individuals, companies and organizations all performing a different kind act in the city," blogger Smith said of the campaign.

We were inspired, so we loaded up our donated goodie bags and made the short trek from CTV to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

In all, the consumer Christmas campaign provided 75 doggie bags for low income pet owners using the food bank this Christmas.

"There's so many families that are struggling and you know really, when they're struggling their four legged family members are struggling as well," said Christine Garlick of Petcurean Pet Nutrition.

It’s a reality volunteers at the Greater Vancouver Food Bank know all too well. When times are tough, it's hard enough to feed the family, let alone the family pet.

"I think the four legged members of their family represent a space of unconditional love that can't be underestimated, particularly at this time of year," said Kay Thody of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

A dog lover herself, consumer show producer Darcy Wintonyk thought it was a perfect way to give back over the holiday season.

"It really does take a village for something like this to happen,” she said, “Thankfully we got some amazing sponsors to help us out and it's the holidays, everyone feels like giving and being generous."
