Every Friday, Consumer Reporter Lynda Steele dips into the mailbag to answer your questions. This week, Steele on Your Side investigates recycling refunds and updates a story about a bankrupt party rental business.

Recycling refund

Carolyn tried to return an almond milk container at a recycling depot, but it wouldn't give her a refund saying it didn't accept milk products. Carolyn correctly pointed out that almond milk is actually a non-dairy product and wants to know why it wouldn’t give her a refund.

Turns out that both milk and milk substitute containers, including almond and soy milk, are not included in the beverage container deposit refund system. The almond milk container could go back to a recycling depot, but because there was no deposit paid you won't get a refund when you return it.

Classic Party Rentals bankruptcy update

In March, Classic Party Rentals shut its doors with no notice, leaving dozens of brides out thousands of dollars. They were left to fight for their lost deposits through a bankruptcy trustee while finding a new company to provide services for their upcoming weddings.

Sheilagh Tepasse, one of the bride's mothers, wrote us to say Mastercard has now refunded the full amount she charged to Classic Party Rentals. She wanted to thank CTV for the media coverage, writing "I believe this was a huge reason that quick action was taken by everyone involved."
