Every Friday, Lynda Steele dips into the viewer mailbag to answer your questions. This week, Steele on Your Side takes a closer look at tolls on local bridges and eco fees.

Bridge tolls

CTV viewer Darren asked why tolls on the Port Mann Bridge and the Golden Ears Bridge are managed by two different companies. He wants to know if it would cost less to be run by one organization.

The Port Mann Bridge is run by the Crown Corporation TReO and TransLink runs the Golden Ears Bridge.

TReO told CTV News that combined billing for both bridges is coming soon. Starting this summer, drivers can manage their Golden Ears tolls and their Port Mann tolls through their Treo account. Customers will need to make sure they have registered with Treo and have an automatic payment method on their account, as well as a Treo decal installed.

Eco fees

Eva wrote CTV News after noticing an eco tax on some products she recently purchased. She asks where the money from this eco levy goes?

The Recycling Council of BC says all of the eco fees collected are put towards the recycling programs for those products.

The fee is shown separately on a receipt to raise awareness about the program.

Before the program was in place, most of these products ended up in landfills, paid for by taxpayers. Now, the consumers who use the products pay for the recycling with that fee.
