A Coast Guard training exercise on Vancouver Island was called off Friday night after problems with its hovercraft.

The vehicle is one of only two left to rescue people and vessels in distress now that the federal government shut down the Coast Guard base in Kitsilano.

Officials downplayed the problems, confirming they did experience “minor vibrations” during the exercise but returned to the base where engineers determined the vehicle was okay.

The incident did not affect coverage, they said, as the other vessel was still operational at Sea Island in Richmond and the two are rarely deployed at the same time.
