This year’s Celebration of Light saved the best show for last. That’s what the judges determined in awarding the trophy to the team from Manitoba-based Archangel Fireworks after its display Saturday night.

Representing Canada in the final fireworks show of the 25th anniversary edition of the Celebration of Light, Archangel paired its display with rap and pop music, dazzling the more than 400,000 people who showed up on the shores of English Bay.

Paramedics and police were busy during the event, but said the vast majority of revelers were well-behaved.

“Nothing extraordinary to talk about,” said Vancouver police Const. Brian Montague after the event. “A few individuals who went to jail tonight, a few minor arrests.”

The bigger problems were medical in nature, he said, but ambulances were able to respond quickly and efficiently to the handful of heart attacks and collapses that were reported.

The third event of the year attracted the largest crowd, but it followed the pattern of good behaviour set at the first two shows, Montague said.

“It’s been a great year,” he said.

Teams representing Brazil and China took second and third places in the competition, respectively.
