A Surrey mother says a group of tweens discovered a body in a water-filled ditch as they walked down a South Surrey Street on Saturday.

Officers were called to the 3600-block of 176 Street shortly before 3 p.m. on Saturday, after the 12- and 13-year-olds made the grisly discovery.

They located the body, but could not immediately confirm the cause of death.

Police have provided few details, but said that it appeared that the body had been in the water for some time.

Mounties have not confirmed that the body was discovered by youth, but a woman said it was discovered by her son's friends.

"(They) were walking and saw something in the ditch, so I checked it out and it's definitely a dead body floating in there," she said.

The investigation is still in its early stage, but police said there is no information to indicate that the remains have anything to do with other ongoing investigations.

Police told CTV News that one of their working theories is that the body could be that of a hit-and-run victim, though they are also investigating other possibilities.

Surrey's major crime unit, the Lower Mainland Forensic Unit and the Lower Mainland Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service have been called to aid in the investigation.
