When you walk into the Expand Furniture showroom in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood, it’s like walking into someone’s home. But as you look around, what you see isn’t necessarily what you get. An unexpected surprise can be found behind every cabinet, table or chair.

“This is a table,” explains co-owner Jared Joubert, “but like James Bond, it becomes a full queen bed.”

We watched as co-owner Jared Joubert transformed a wall shelf into a table and then into a bed. The company has hundreds of products that help meets the needs of many residents in Metro Vancouver who find themselves living in smaller spaces.

Vancouver interior designer Linda Sale loaded up her home with many of the company’s products. She says she loves the versatility.

"My home office also doubles as a spare bedroom," said Sale. And a small accent table that was tucked neatly into her open living space was a shocker. It transformed into a long dining room table that seats ten.

Expand Furniture truly is a family affair. Jared, Adam and Camilla Joubert are siblings who started the company online.

“The sizing of apartments is going down and eventually we realized we needed to have better furniture,” said Jared.

The videos they post of their unique space saving furniture caught our attention and now they are hoping their new showroom helps capture metro Vancouver’s imagination too.

The company will ship anywhere in North America. But the space saving products can come with a bigger than expected price tag. The adjustable wood coffee table that expanded into a full dining room table costs $1895. The bookshelf-table-bed combination sells for $7500 and you can buy the murphy bed-sofa combination for $5495.

Sale spent about $15,000 on her furniture but she thinks that was very cost effective.

“Everything is two items,” she said, Some things are even expanded into three.

“Spaces should be multi-use. And why have a dining table when you’re not using it?”
