BC Ferries has cancelled several Sunday sailings due to windy conditions as an Arctic chill hits B.C.’s south coast.

The Queen of New Westminster, which travels between Vancouver’s Tsawwassen terminal and Nanaimo’s Duke Point, had both its 10:15 a.m. departing from Vancouver and 12:45 leaving from Duke Point cancelled.

Sailings between Victoria and Vancouver were also affected by the adverse weather conditions. The 11 a.m. 1, and 2 p.m. sailings from Tsawwassen, as well as 11a.m., noon, and 1 p.m. sailings from Swartz Bay were cancelled.

BC Ferries said sailings between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay terminals would resume normally at 3 p.m.

On Sunday morning, Environment Canada updated its special weather statement saying the South Coast and Vancouver Island will be hit with an icy chill – and maybe even flurries – starting Sunday night.

Temperatures will continue to drop through Tuesday as the arctic front reaches the coast, falling five to 10 degrees below normal.

A strong incoming frontal system is expected on Thursday, likely bringing with it a more significant snowfall.

Environment Canada is encouraging the public to prepare for wintery conditions.
