Students have given a Vancouver Island high school principal a lesson in telecommunications law in response to his efforts to control their cellphone use.

Steve Gray, principal of Port Hardy Secondary School on northern Vancouver Island, bought a cellphone jammer online and fired it up last week in an effort to block students texting and calling while in class.

But within three days angry students had figured out what was disrupting service in their classrooms and had researched cell blockers to determine they are illegal in Canada.

Gray says he immediately unplugged the device.

He says he's asking teachers to strictly enforce the school rule against use of the phones while he mulls his options.

The principal admits he is reluctant to suspend a student for cellphone use and agrees the matter may require some input from the B.C. Principals and Vice-Principals' Association.
