British Columbians plan on spending more than $800 this year on holiday shopping, despite having regrets about spending too much in 2014, says a new survey.

In its online poll, Vancity said the average holiday shopper plans on shelling out $803.96. That’s despite 40 per cent of respondents saying they overspent last year.

Ten per cent of respondents said they spent “too little” in 2014.

When it comes to what they want to receive for Christmas, just 31 per cent said they wanted an item purchased from a store.

Instead, 14 per cent of respondents said they’d like an experience, 13 per cent said they wanted cash, 13 per cent prefer handmade items, and the remaining 12 per cent would like a gift certificate.

Vancity says people should be careful about putting presents on credit, so they won’t be ringing in the New Year with debt.
