A 33-year-old dental hygienist has become B.C.’s latest multi-millionaire, and her first order of business is giving something back to her hard-working mom.

Lisa-Marie Draganiuk was one of four winners in the June 5 Lotto Max draw, netting her a whopping $12.5 million. She knew right away where some of the money would go.

“The first thing that we did was… go and pick up my mom with a huge bouquet of flowers and tell her that after 34 years of working at the same job, that she no longer has to work another day in her life,” Draganiuk said.

Her mom is “an independent little thing,” Draganiuk added, and hasn’t decided whether she’ll take her up on the offer.

The jackpot winner and her husband Merle were handed an oversized cheque at the B.C. Lottery Corporation headquarters Thursday, where both said they’re still in a state of utter disbelief.

Draganiuk said she decided to pick up a lottery ticket based on a gut feeling. She didn’t bother to check it until days later, following a trip to the grocery store.

After using a self-checking machine, Draganiuk recalled seeing the number 12, a comma, and the number five, and thought she’d won thousands, not millions. She was still so excited she had to sit down before calling her husband.

“I was delirious at that point,” Draganiuk said.

Her husband said he was excited to learn about their apparent $12,500 win, but had to rush off the phone to pick up his father from the airport. Though Draganiuk learned the truth about their massive win shortly after, she waited until her husband returned home to share the good news.

“She had written me an amazing one-page letter about our love and our relationship and our family,” he said, choking up. “It was unbelievable. And we’re overjoyed and so grateful and humbled and feeling amazingly blessed.”

Draganiuk said she wanted to make sure her husband understood their newfound fortune wouldn’t change their family.

“I’m so lucky to have him as my partner and my best friend and I just wanted him to know that we were going in this together,” she said.

The couple have one child and are expecting a second, so they said they’ll be looking at purchasing some real estate soon.

Other than that, Draganiuk said they don’t have any firm plans for their winnings.

“We’re just going to play it day-by-day,” she said.
