Muriel Peters’ store puts the “British” in British Columbia.

The British Store, a Surrey shop that carries goods imported from the United Kingdom is decked out in Union Jacks 365 days a year, but on Saturday they were particularly appropriate.

“Today's a special day, you know,” Peters said. “It's a special day. something that should be celebrated, in my eyes.”

She and her customers celebrated the birth of Britain’s new princess: the second child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the fourth in line to the throne.

“It’s exciting any time a child comes into a new family, and this is the same,” said Keith Roy of the Monarchist League of Canada. “William and Catherine are probably just overjoyed with the arrival of a baby girl, and they get to share that joy with the entire Commonwealth.”

And everywhere the news was discussed on Saturday, that joy also turned to speculation.

What will the new princess be named?

“I think Alice,” Peters said. “That seems to be top runner from what i heard.”

There’s also Charlotte, said Roy. Those two are the favourites of oddsmakers who are taking bets on what the child will be named.

“Victoria and Elizabeth are always in the running for names of a baby girl in the royal family,” he said.

The British Store customer Jan Gemmill thinks those names are more likely because the new baby’s older brother has a more traditional name.

“She went with traditional with George so, traditional,” Gemmill said, when asked what she thought the new baby’s name would be.

“I hope she doesn’t call it Elizabeth,” said Lynda Hutton. “I don’t want it to be the same as the queen.”

For the group assembled at The British Store, Victoria was a clear favourite.

“I think Victoria would be nice,” Peters said. “Especially living here, Victoria would be -- I mean, it’s everywhere here in British Columbia.”
