An Alberta couple is down $90,000 after police caught a whiff of marijuana during a roadside check in Clearwater, B.C.

The 50-year-old woman and 46-year-old man were on their way to Metro Vancouver when they ran into a safety stop operated by RCMP on Monday.

While officers were checking the drivers' licence and registration, they smelled marijuana inside the car.

After searching the vehicle, police discovered only a small amount of marijuana, but they also found $90,000 in cash in the car's glove compartment and a suitcase in the truck.

The cash was seized, and police are now conducting a proceeds of crime investigation. The two suspects have been released from custody on $2,500 bail, and are scheduled to appear in court on August 24.
