Assault charges have been stayed against the ex-boyfriend of a B.C. university student gunned down in a parking garage last month.
Gurjinder "Gary" Dhaliwal turned himself in to police earlier this month on two assault charges against 19-year-old actress Maple Batalia and a young man. His arrest came just days after Batalia was murdered near the Surrey campus of Simon Fraser University.
The charges stemmed from an incident at a Tim Hortons donut shop on Sept. 24, just four days before Batalia's death.
Crown spokesman Neil McKenzie told CTV News that prosecutors directed a stay of proceedings against Dhaliwal on Tuesday and do not plan to pursue the assault charges.
"On review of the case, the charge assessment standard for proceeding was not met any longer," McKenzie said.
No arrests have been made in Batalia's death, but the teen's family alleges she was having troubles with a former boyfriend.
However, investigators have identified a suspect vehicle seen driving from the site of the murder shortly after Batalia was killed. Surveillance cameras captured a white, late-model Dodge Charger with a sunroof near the SFU campus.
Police say the attack on Batalia was targeted, and as many as 50 investigators have been assigned to the case.
