RCMP are asking the public's help to identify the person responsible for shooting attack in a residential neighbourhood in Burnaby Monday evening.

Police and ambulance crews flooded the area off 12th Avenue near Canada Way in the southwest area of the city around 8:30 p.m. after multiple shots rang out.

Sgt. Derek Thibodeau said Mounties arrived to find a man with gunshot wounds. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but has since been upgraded to serious condition.

Witnesses told CTV Morning Live they saw a gloved man armed with a rifle run away from the shooting scene and climb into a waiting car.

The suspect is described as a white man wearing all black clothing. Mounties believe the getaway car is a dark-coloured vehicle with a roof rack. At least one other person was in the vehicle, RCMP said.

"Police believe this was a targeted shooting and the motive is part of the investigation," Sgt. Thibodeau said in a statement to media. The gang unit is now involved in the investigation.

The shooting has left the neighbourhood on edge.

"It's a crazy situation," said one area resident, who didn't want to be named for fear of his family's safety. "Everyone is shaken up because it's really close to home."

Neighbours believe the victim was living in a home on the corner that has several suites inside.

Mounties were on the scene throughout the evening gathering evidence and much of the neighbourhood was still behind police tape Tuesday morning.

Anyone with information is asked to call Burnaby RCMP at 1-604-294-7922 or, if they wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca
