An anonymous blog seething with hatred toward Vancouver has become an internet sensation, sparking debate over whether the criticism is justified.

“Hi, I live in Vancouver and well, I hate it,” reads the introduction to a Tumblr website called “IHateVan.” “This blog is about the many reasons why you should hate it too. Why is this important? Because to have change you need to know what needs to change.”

The author, who says he wants to remain anonymous because he is a politician, goes on to attack dozens of classic Vancouver stereotypes like people who wear yoga pants, veggie burgers and Vancouverites’ perceived unfriendliness.

“Buy $100 jeans before $100 yoga pants,” he writes in a list of fashion tips. “I can do yoga in ugly a** shorts.”

Also targeted are Vancouver residents who respond to complaints about the city by saying “if you don’t like it, you should leave.”

“The whole go-back-where-you-came-from attitude is a colonialist settler mentality that fails to recognize that the newcomers have a right to express dissatisfaction at how they are treated by others,” the blogger counters.

Observations range from the superficial (cut-off jean shorts are terrible) to the slightly more profound (Vancouver is beautiful, but that’s not enough to make it a lovable city).

The blog has spawned the hashtag #ihatevan, with many weighing in on Twitter. Surprisingly, many locals seemed to agree with some of the blogger’s opinions.

But not everyone was on board, with some telling the blogger to – you guessed it – move to another city.
