The alleged hit-and-run driver who struck an 11-year-old boy Thursday in Surrey has turned himself in, Mounties said Friday.

The 19-year-old Surrey resident’s vehicle has been seized and is being investigated.

The collision occurred on 82 Avenue near 154B Street after the boy stepped off a school bus, which had its flashing red lights activated and was displaying its stop sign, according to police.

Mounties say a dark-coloured older Honda drove around the bus and hit the boy, sending him flying through the air.

The driver did not stop at the scene.

The boy was transported to hospital by air ambulance and his injuries are non-life-threatening.

“We are pleased to report that the driver did the right thing by coming forward and turning himself in, and we are extremely happy that the child involved in this accident is expected to make a speedy recovery,” said Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet.
