Air Canada has cancelled flights to Tokyo for Friday after a deadly earthquake and tsunami swept through Japan.

A spokesman for the airline said its flights from Toronto and Vancouver to the Japanese capital were cancelled and the airline was monitoring the situation before it decides whether to cancel any more in the coming days.

Air Canada said it has no reports of injuries to any of its staff in Japan.

As of noon, the website for Japan Airlines shows a flight from Tokyo to Vancouver for today was scheduled to take off.  But Tokyo's Narita airport is closed indefinitely.

United Airlines said it expects conditions at Japanese airports to lead to delays or cancellations of flights to and from Japan. It asked customers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport and was offering to reschedule at no cost.

American Airlines and Delta say they will waive reissue fees for passengers booked to travel to Tokyo between Friday and March 18.

About 1,500 Canadians have registered with the foreign affairs ministry to say they're living in Japan. If you are worried about a loved one, call 613-943-1055 or 1-800-387-3124 for information.
