A 23-year old man is in the hospital after someone fired shots at his vehicle early Saturday morning in Abbotsford.

Police received several calls reporting shots fired at around 2 a.m. in the area of Blue Jay Street and Cardinal Avenue. When police arrived they found the driver inside a Cadillac Escalade with gunshot wounds.

Witness Harpreet Tatla heard the victim calling for help and rushed to the SUV where the young man was bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds.

The vehicle had collided with a power pole and gone off the road. Abbotsford Police could not confirm if the shooting was a targeted hit or if the victim was known to police.

“He’s driving a dark-coloured SUV, it’s two o’clock in the morning, it looks like he was descended upon or there was a conflict in the middle of an intersection,” said Cst. Ian MacDonald.

The unidentified man was taken to hospital and is now in stable condition.

In September 2015 Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun spoke about low-level drug dealers involved in escalating crime in the area.

“These kids are taking over our streets and they have no fear of the police or our justice system,” he said.

Families in the area said they are worried about the safety of their neighborhood.

“Everybody is scared now, all the neighbourhood, everybody is scared,” said neighbour Inderjit Singh Sidhu.

No arrests have been made and investigators are reviewing security camera footage that may have captured the shooting.
