Update: The RCMP has confirmed one person was killed in a head-on crash between a bus and car in B.C.'s Shuswap region Friday.

Police say the car crossed the centre line on Highway 1 south of Chase, crashing into a tour bus carrying about 60 young international students from Korea.

The bus driver and about 20 students were taken to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops with minor injuries. The man driving the car was killed in the crash, and his identity has not yet been released.

Chase Mayor Richard Berrigan says Friday's accident is not the first on this stretch of highway.

"We've lost local people, and communities next door to us have lost family members," he said, noting the plan is to widen the area to four lanes.

"The only thing I can say is this is a very tragic situation…People need to be mindful of the curves and narrowness, and they need to slow down."

Wescan Charter Bus Lines told CTV News that all the passengers aboard the bus are doing well and everyone has been discharged from the hospital, including the bus driver who they say suffered injuries to a knee and ankle.

Previous story: A passenger bus carrying dozens of people has been involved in a crash on Highway 1 south of Chase, in B.C.'s Shuswap region.

The accident between the bus and a car happened about 4 p.m. Friday, at the start of a holiday long-weekend.

Alyshia Higgins with the B.C. Ambulance Service said about 60 people were wounded in the crash. Five people have been rushed to hospital and the rest are being assessed by paramedics at the scene.

Of the five taken to Royal Inland Hospital, four have non-life-threatening injuries. One person who was earlier reported to be in critical condition has been upgraded to serious condition, she said.

Higgins said one air ambulance and six ground ambulances have responded.

The crash, which is the third to involve a tour bus in B.C.'s Interior in a year, has closed the highway in both directions.

Fire departments from both nearby Chase and Pritchard responded. Chase Fire Chief Brian Lauzon said he was paged at around 4:30 p.m.

"Sounds like it's involving two vehicles and a possible large number of casualties," he said.

He said Kamloops' fire department also responded and one patient had to be airlifted out.

The accident is reported to have happened in the area known as Hoffman's Bluff, a two-lane stretch of road that the provincial government announced earlier this year would be upgraded to four lanes to improve safety through the area.

A spokeswoman for Interior Health authority, Michaela Swann, said Royal Inland Hospital hasn't initiated what it calls a "code orange" yet.
