B.C.’s police watchdog has been called to investigate a crash involving an RCMP cruiser that put five people in hospital Tuesday afternoon.

The cruiser and a van collided around 1:30 p.m. at Fraser Highway and 268th Street in Langley, leaving both vehicles mangled and debris strewn across the road.

The van, which was carrying a family of four from Calgary, came to a rest on its side next to a street light.

One person was airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital in serious condition, while four others were taken to Abbotsford Regional Hospital via ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

Incredibly, all five were released before 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Shortly after the crash, the Independent Investigation Office announced it was probing the Mountie’s involvement. The actions of the other driver are being investigated by Langley RCMP.

Few details have been confirmed but the IIO said the marked cruiser was travelling code 3, meaning it had emergency equipment activated, at the time of the collision. The officer was en route to an unrelated complaint.

It’s unclear which vehicle struck the other.
