A man is in serious condition in hospital after being struck by a Corvette that jumped the curb at a bus shelter in the 9600-block of King George Blvd.

The victim was sitting on a bench at the bus stop when the sports car lost control, jumped the curb and slammed into the bus shelter around 6:15 p.m. Thursday night.

The impact nearly flattened the bus shelter and sent debris flying for several metres.  The victim needed surgery for broken legs and lower body injuries.

A passenger in the car was also hurt in the accident and taken to hospital to be treated for injuries not considered to be serious.

The driver of the car took off on foot. He jumped into a taxi and was eventually arrested near Bear Creek Park when police caught up with the cab.

About a dozen people were at the bus stop just moments after the crash, including a woman who said she was nearly hit as well.

“I’m talking 30 seconds. The white car… almost hit me. I had my back turning around to where I live. So I would have been a victim too,” one woman told CTV Vancouver.

RCMP say alcohol may be a factor in the crash.

This is the second serious crash at a Surrey bus stop in two days.

On Wednesday, a 22-year-old man was killed while waiting for a bus when a teen driver lost control and jumped the curb.

Weather and driver inexperience are being cited as factors in the tragic accident.
