Two men are in critical condition after an apparent head-on collision between a sedan and a marked RCMP cruiser Tuesday night in Agassiz, B.C.

The 20-year-old driver from Mission, B.C. and a passenger were airlifted to hospital, where authorities say their condition is improving.

The Abbotsford Police Department, which was called in to investigate the crash, says the officer involved suffered minor injures and has been already discharged from the hospital.

The Mountie was responding to another officer's call when his car collided with a red Mustang at 11 p.m. on the Lougheed Highway near Bodner Road.

"I don't have the details on what the nature of that call is yet," Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said.

The Mustang appeared to be the front car of a convoy heading to Harrison at the time of the accident, MacDonald told ctvbc.ca

Eight officers, including a collision deconstructionist, are gathering evidence and working to determine the cause of the accident.

MacDonald says they will also confirm whether the Mountie had the cruiser's lights and siren on at the time of the crash.

"We have access to data from the RCMP vehicle itself. We can gather information from the GPS, the airbag deployment and breaks," he said.

Highway 7 is expected to remain closed between Highway 9 and Morris Valley Road until the afternoon.
