CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. - A man from the United States has been killed in a helicopter crash on the B.C. coast north of Powell River.

RCMP say the helicopter, carrying the pilot and five passengers, including four U.S. residents, went down Saturday evening near Bute Inlet.

The chopper crashed shortly after takeoff, overturned and sank in the Homathco River.

The 68-year-old pilot and a 44-year-old man, both from Gold River, escaped along with a 63-year-old U.S. woman and two U.S. men aged 37 and 71. A 48-year-old American man was trapped in the wreckage and police say efforts to recover his body resume Monday.

One of the survivors remains in a Victoria-area hospital but the other four, including the pilot, have been released after treatment.

Police say the there are no indications of criminal involvement in the crash and the Transportation Safety Board and coroner are investigating.
