Preparations are underway for Vancouver’s annual Celebration of Light fireworks competition that kicks off Saturday.

Over 1.2 million people are expected to take in the three musical fireworks shows from the shores of English Bay and surrounding areas. Vancouver police say their operational plans will be changed in the wake of recent terror attacks.

Deputy Chief Const. Warren Lemcke of the VPD said officers will be deployed on bikes and horseback, as well as on patrol from boats and aircraft.

“In Canada right now the threat level is at medium. There are no specific threats that are pointed at the city of Vancouver. But having said that, we are going to be extremely vigilant. We'd also ask that the public be vigilant. If you see something thing, say something,” Lemcke said.

Alcohol-fuelled fights are the biggest concern for police at the events. Tickets for open alcohol will set you back $230 and the park board is enforcing the smoking ban in parks and beaches, with a $250 fine.

Event organizers said additional fire crews and paramedics will be at the event site throughout the day, reminding people to stay hydrated as temperatures climb in the coming days.

A fireworks show by Team Netherlands is up first this Saturday night, followed by Team Australia on Wednesday July 27 and Team U.S.A. on Saturday July 30.

All three light shows start at 10 p.m. regardless of the weather.
